In this workshop, participants will be active in all parts of the glazing, wadding, loading, and firing process. Participants will bring between 50-70 bisque-fired cones ^10 pieces for the firing. Day 1 will be spent glazing and wadding work. Day 2, everyone will actively participate in loading the salt chamber of the Adamah wood kiln. Firing the kiln is expected to last around 30 hours, during which participants are expected to split and stack wood, load wood into the kiln, and help with the salting of the kiln. The following week, everyone will come back to unload the kiln, clean shelves, stack wood, and clean the kiln shed.
Please note: This is a physically demanding workshop. Part of the woodfire process includes splitting and preparing wood for the next firing to come. This workshop may require an overnight/early morning stoking shift. There is also no guarantee that all pieces will get fired due to space or size of pieces.
Materials to Bring
- Cotton clothing for firing
- Sturdy work shoes/boots
Please bring 50–70 cone 10 bisque-fired pieces to be included in the kiln firing. This number is based on average mug-sized pieces. If you bring smaller works that can safely nest inside one another (without glaze), you may be able to include up to 70 pieces. If you bring a few larger items such as platters or bowls, expect to fit closer to 50 pieces. The instructor will do their best to ensure everyone gets a fair number of pieces in the kiln. We recommend including a few tall, narrow forms to take advantage of the top arch space in the kiln.
